This five-hour miniseries, which was hailed as both a critical triumph and a milestone "television event" when it originally aired in 1974, is based on the Leon Uris novel, which itself was based on a libel trial that arose after Uris published his novel Exodus. The fictionalized drama is essentially the story of two men, Dr. Adam Kelno, a Polish doctor who was imprisoned by the Nazis in a concentration camp, and Abe Cady, a successful Hollywood writer who publishes a serious book on the Holocaust that exposes Kelno's past. Playing Dr. Kelno, Anthony Hopkins steals the show, and the nuances he brings to the character keep the audience guessing whether he is in fact a dedicated healer or a diabolical villain intent on papering over a fiendish past. Ben Gazzara is credible as the tough-talking Cady, but when Hopkins leaves the action for a time the film sags and begins to resemble an ordinary TV movie. Eventually the two men's lives come into conflict when Kelno sues for libel. The trial, which takes place in a London courtroom (the "Queen's Bench VII" of the title), seeks to sort out the truth about the past of Dr. Kelno. His precise activities during the war, and how the world deals with his past, receive intelligent and dramatic treatment. --Robert J. McNamara

5 out of 5 stars TV classic   July 13, 2010
Mark Nicholl
I first watched this mini series back in the 70's and enjoyed it.

When it became available on DVD I knew it would be a welcome addition to my collection.
A stellar cast many of whom are no longer with us (the beautiful Lee Remick, Jack Hawkins just to name two), bring this story of the Holocaust and its survivors to life seen through the eyes of the two protagonists in a libel trial.

Both Ben Gazzara and Anthony Hopkins are excellent in their roles of the brash American novelist/war hero (is he a playboy or serious novelist?) and the tortured doctor/Knight of the Realm (is he a victim of the Nazi's or a collaborator?)

The look of the DVD may seem dated to modern eyes as it was a made for television drama, but the scenes are well constructed and the story moves at a decent enough pace...

Disc 1 explores the lives of both men and their families from shortly before the end of WWII until they finally meet on the steps of the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

Disc 2. Concentrates on the court case itself showing the torment of the Anthony Hopkins character when facing the Jewish survivors. Was he the caring doctor he claims to be or someone involved in horrendous experiments?

What will the jury decide?

Will they find in favour of a renowned doctor who has been Knighted by the Queen?

A holocaust survivor who has spent his life since the war saving lives. From the deserts of Kuwait, to the back streets of London he has chosen to work amongst the impoverished and needy.

Can he really be the man named by an American novelist as a war criminal? Someone who sterilised men, women and children in an attempt to eradicate the Jewish race?

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Redemption   May 14, 2010

"QB VII" is a great read and almost as good a view! Despite some slow moments, it is a captivating movie crossing the lives of two men. Each has seemingly redeemed himself for sins of the past. One does it successfully, yet is ultimately punished. The other is unsuccessful and continues to live with his demons until he has falsely convinced himself that his sins are in the past and forgotten. But his sins are beyond redemption in this world as he discovers while his life dissolves in pain. Performances by Ben Gazzara and Anthony Hopkins are brilliant. The rest of the cast is simply great.

5 out of 5 stars QB VII Very sad subject matter   April 14, 2010

I read Leon Uris's book in the 1970's. It was so riviting I thought about it for a very long time. I was glad to see a movie made and compelled to view it. The portrayals by Anthony Hopkins and Ben Gazzara brilliantly brought the characters to life. For me, watching a good movie more than once does not lose its appeal. It was exciting to have found a copy for my library of special movies.
